My ankles have ballooned up somewhat. Click on the link below for a look. Normally they are little bony protrusions with no fat or swelling but now they have gone all squidgy like 2 half plums stuck on....ugh. They hurt a lot too. I started steroids on Thursday and feel full of energy again and I think the swelling may be going down. I'm on steroids for the next month so hopefully this will be enough to calm them right down. The wrists and thumb joints are swollen too but not as bad as the ankles. It's strange how RA seems to flit between joints, as though it thinks "I know!, lets have a go at the ankles today...just for fun". I know you'll all understand. Strangely though I feel quite positive now....must be the steroids xxxxx http://img341.imageshack.us/img341/8128/gqi.jpg

Hi Naomi. That is one truly inpressive ankle swelling, have you been on your feet too much since being given the steroids and feeling like superwoman? Hope it soon improves, its no fun when ankles are like that. Best wishes Sheila

Hi....I'm on the steroids for the next month, though will keep an eye and review this with the nurse if the steroids don't seem to be working well enough. My shoulders and collar bones are joining in with the flare party today...ugh. I'm trying to find a good balance between rest and not seizing up. I keep my feet up in the evenings with lovely soothing cool packs resting on the ankles. A friend suggested getting one of those flexible silver wine cooler cylinders, cutting it so that it's a flat sheet and then wrapping my ankles in this....I may give this a go xxxxx

Your poor ankles Naomi!!! I hope the steroids calm everything down for a while, if not you may need to ask for a DMARDS assessment.
You are doing the right thing keeping your feet up on an evening, ice packs are good but I also find a support soaked in cold water on my foot helps to reduce the inflammation, if you an put up with a soggy support on your foot.
I know what you mean by R.A moving around from one joint to another, no joint is immune from this horrible disease.
Hope you start to feel a bit better soon. Love Rebecca

Oh Naomi, it looks sore, hope it's better now. Apart from my fingers I have never really had any swelling, just goes to show how different RA can be, there is nothing set in stone of what to expect.
I know what you mean about going from one joint to another, the same use to happen with me. I had visions of a little devil with a hammer going from joint to joint shouting....peek a boo, here I am, catch me if you can.
Hope the wonders of steroids have calmed things down for you.
Love Paula x

haha....I like your idea of the little devil Paula. The worst of the swelling has gone down. I still have a week and a half of steroids to go. I wonder if my ankles will be the same as they were before this episode. The podiatrist is making me some ankle splints because the left ankle keeps giving out on me and both are really painful if I'm walking more than a few hundred metres or I'm on my feet a lot which I quite often am at work. I have a temporary splint to keep me going but it's rather tight so I'll be glad when the tailor made ones arrive. xxx
